There’s this really cool shop in NYC that specializes in all things pencil. It’s exactly the kind of establishment that, were I still living in Manhattan, would have been one of my favorite places hang out at. However, since I live in Portland, they sent me this totally awesome hand wrapped package with, you guessed it, pencils. They also included a lovely personalized, hand-written note.

How cool is that?!?

I think it was just a general poll about what we would want to be saved, not what could actually be saved. I hope there’s a way for Netflix to pick it up. Since they already have a lot of Marvel shows I think this would be our best bet to get more of it.

I can’t even say how much I’m going to miss Peggy in her own show, it hurts really bad :(

I honestly don’t get it either. Like they could’ve at least let the show develope to the actual founding of S.H.I.E.L.D.??? Ugh why.

Bio: Cartoonist for The New Yorker. Over the years, I’ve also done work for other magazines such as Barron’s, Penthouse, and Punch.

Tools of choice: For the roughs that I send in every week, I use Staedtler pigment liners and black watercolor crayon on a heavy duty HP laser paper, which allows me to use a pretty heavy wash without the paper wrinkling. These roughs are actually pretty finished, so if they don’t sell to The New Yorker, I can send them on somewhere else to be used as is.

For grey wash I’ve found that Caran d’ Ache watercolor crayons give me a sort of murky grey with a lot of texture that I like. It’s also easier for me to control than regular watercolors. I also use Pro White paint for my many mistakes. I never throw the crayon stubs away - I guess in the back of my mind I’m worried that someday there might be a watercolor crayon shortage.

For the finishes I use a dip pen, FW acrylic ink, and watercolor crayon on a smooth surface bristol board. A great big magnifying glass is also helpful.

My little dog, Holly, and my old black cat, Lucky, are always close by when I’m working.

Tools I wish I could use better: I’d really like to know more about electronic tablets. I’ve tried drawing on my iPad, but I can’t seem to get the hang of it - I’m probably too old.

Tools I wish existed: This may actually exist somewhere, but I wish I could find a fountain pen that uses permanent ink and wouldn’t clog; it should also have a flexible drawing nib. I would also like for this pen to be reasonably priced.

Tricks and Misc: It took me many years to sell my first cartoon, so it seems to me that the most important thing in the whole wide world is persistence. You should turn out as much work as you can, ignore all the rejections and ugly comments, and keep sending your stuff out, no matter what. And be prepared to do it for a very long time, and don’t expect to make a lot of money. It also helps to be an optimist.

PORTLAND COMICS PEOPLE ASSEMBLE!!

The Portland  State University Comics Studies program joins the Will & Ann Eisner  Family Foundation to recognize Will Eisner Week 2016, the annual series  of events held across the country that celebrate graphic novels, sequential  art, free speech, and the legacy of Will Eisner, one of the most innovative  figures in the history of comics and graphic novels.

The PSU  Comics Studies program will host a special screening of the documentary Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential  Artist followed by a panel discussion of “Eisner the Dreamer.”

Panel discussion  participants include Steve Lieber, Eisner-Award winning cartoonist, illustrator  and storyboard artist; Matt Wagner, comics artist and creator of Grendel and current writer of The Spirit; David Walker, an award-winning comic book writer; and  Heidi Kaufman, Associate Professor of English and comics scholar at  University of Oregon.

The event will be moderated  by Brian Michael Bendis, an award-winning writer whose work  includes Powers, Jessica Jones, Avengers, Ultimate Spider-man, and Daredevil, among many others.

Will Eisner (1917-2005) was a  pioneer in the creation of comics during the “Golden Age” of the 1930s and  ’40s, achieving fame with his noir crime-fighting superhero, The Spirit. He  later re-invented himself by publishing several graphic novels, including A Contract with God and To the Heart of the Storm. Each year,  the prestigious Will Eisner Awards, the “Oscars of the Comics Industry,” are  presented at San Diego Comic-Con, the world’s largest comics convention.

Why do we resist?

That which is so freely given to us. The
Great Balance of nature that is at
once surrounding us, filling us and
flowing through us. Time now to
speak.

Our own words back into the

Balance. Allowing our

sacred souls and holy
bodies to once again
Become.

Fully.

Present in the center
of infinite beauty
and balance. Our

Too speak from this
Balance. Uniquely our

Power. Seeking to

Greater Beauty and Infinite
Balance.

In the world
around us.
